The Telegraph: Lammy hints at U-turn over jury trials

Justice Secretary ‘open to conversation’ on alternatives as long as court backlogs are cleared.

David Lammy has opened the door to a climbdown on Labour’s plans to scrap half of all jury trials.

The Justice Secretary said he was open to a “conversation” on alternative options to the plan, but insisted the Government had to tackle a backlog of nearly 80,000 cases.

Mr Lammy is facing opposition to his plans from up to 60 Labour MPs, lawyers and peers across all parties.

Asked if he would consider alternative options for reducing the backlog, Mr Lammy replied: “Let’s have the conversation, but I’m pretty clear that in the end, I want the backlog coming down.”
